End Of 2011: Best Song - Nada Surf (‘When I Was Young’)

Okay, so the album itself (‘The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy’) isn’t out until January 2012, but the song was released back in 2011, so i came to the conclusion that the song was a valid contender. Enjoy!

Bands You Really Need To Know - 1. MUTEMATH (Song - Clipping)

There was only ever going to be one band at the summit of this list and the alternative rockers from New Orleans certainly strike a fierce claim to its position at number one. Awash with almost unimaginable instrumental prowess and depth, that ensures differing and ambitious songs which set out to make an instant mark with their innate complexity. The added imposition of an incredible live set ensures their prime position only further as one of the best bands to see live and that is something I highly recommend people to do at least once in their life. ‘Clipping’ itself offers the best portrayal of the band; top vocals, dark imposing lyrics and a sweltering mix of instruments builds up to something that possesses such gravity and is so very meaningful in its make-up, that by the time we have reached the climax of it all, we are already intensely drawn into the Mutemath story. This is Mutemath, and quite simply, everyone should listen to their brilliance at one point in time.

Bands You Really Need To Know - 3. Bayside (Song - A Call To Arms)

You didn’t really think i’d leave out a punk band from this list, did you people? Storming into the top three is Queens band, Bayside. With five album releases to their name and cult status already assured amongst the punk rock scene perhaps they aren’t to be considered up and coming or young anymore, nevertheless they are a band that simply everyone has to listen to at some point in their life. Since forming in 2000, they have earned a mountain of respect for their lyrical prowess, guitar work and timeless relevance and with the release of their fifth album ‘Killing Time’ earlier in the year they continue to set the bar (at a devilish high) for modern punk rock.

Why should you check them out? For me, Bayside have always been centered around their lyrical innovativeness and are undoubtedly the best lyricists in this list. Weld this together with a brand of energetic and excitable guitar work and you have a band  that deservedly demands authority amongst their peers. Early on in their career, people spoke of Bayside as if it were a cult, and if that’s the case it certainly has a never-ending mass of people waiting to join - as for me, well I’m already there.
